Qasr Ibrim was built on top of the three capes on the eastern bank of the Nile, 70 meters above the river. While the lagoon has sometimes revealed a land bridge connecting the island to the mainland, it is more often an island today. This complex is now the last on Lake Nasser before Abu Simbel, but since it is no longer open to tourists, you can only see it from the comfort of a Lake Nasser cruise boat.
This place has been used since the time of the pharaohs. Romans also lived there, and he lived there until the middle of the 19th century. It was on a high cliff above the Nile, but as the water level rose, it became an island made of rocks in the middle of Lake Nasser. This is the only landmark around the lake that remains in the same spot.
The importance of Qasr Ibrim:
Qasr Ibrim used to protect a busy city, but now most of the ruins are submerged due to the lake. During the Middle Ages, this place became more critical, so the most interesting ruins on the island are the remains of a large cathedral that used to be here. People lived in the area until the mid-nineteenth century when it began to collapse.
Before the lake covered them, the city ruins were the best place to find ancient Nubian documents. Excavations are still ongoing on the cathedral and other buildings on the island. Cruise ships dock next to the island so people can get the best view of the ruins while on land.
